VIETNAM’S WOOD EXPORT INDUSTRY TARGETS $18 BILLION IN 2025
By 2025, Vietnam’s wood industry has set an ambitious export target of $17.5 - $18 billion, reinforcing its position as a leading global hub for wood processing and exports. With the global market recovering and favorable trade policies in place, the industry is poised for strong growth. However, businesses must proactively address challenges related to legal timber traceability, sustainability standards, and increasing regional competition.

Vietnam’s Wood Export Performance in 2024 – A Strong Foundation
According to Vietnam Customs, the total export value of wood and wood products in 2024 reached $16.25 billion, marking a 20.3% increase compared to 2023. Key highlights include:
- Wood products accounted for $11.2 billion, growing 21.9% year-over-year.
- Non-timber forest products contributed $1.04 billion, bringing the total forestry export value to $17.3 billion.
- The United States remained Vietnam’s largest market, importing $9.1 billion worth of wood products, representing 56% of the country’s total wood exports.
- The EU, China, and emerging markets such as the UAE and India showed significant growth, expanding export opportunities.
Compared to the record $15.8 billion in 2022, Vietnam’s 2024 wood exports exceeded that milestone by approximately $500 million, laying a solid foundation for future expansion in 2025.
Sustainability – A Key Factor for Long-Term Growth
While export figures are on the rise, Vietnam’s wood industry faces increasingly strict international requirements regarding sustainability and legal timber sourcing. Several key regulations are shaping the industry’s future:
- EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR): Requires businesses to ensure clear, legal timber sourcing with no deforestation links.
- Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM): Encourages manufacturers to reduce carbon emissions and adopt eco-friendly production methods.
- Sustainable Forestry Certifications (FSC, PEFC): Essential for accessing high-value markets such as the EU, the US, and Japan.
- Timber Plantation Area Codes: A pilot project in Northern Vietnam aimed at improving supply chain traceability and compliance with global sourcing standards.
According to Mr. Tran Quang Bao, Director of the Department of Forestry, developing large-scale sustainable timber plantations and improving supply chain management will help Vietnam enhance wood export value while meeting global sustainability criteria.
Challenges Facing Vietnam’s Wood Industry
Despite its impressive growth, the industry faces significant hurdles:
- Strict timber legality requirements: Importing countries are tightening regulations, requiring greater transparency in sourcing and supply chains.
- Rising regional competition: Countries like Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia are increasing their investments in the wood sector.
- Global economic fluctuations: Potential recessions could impact consumer demand, affecting export revenue.
- Labor shortages and technology gaps: To stay competitive, businesses must invest in advanced processing technology and workforce development.
Strategic Development Plan for 2025
To achieve the $18 billion export goal, the wood industry must implement key strategic initiatives:
1. Enhancing Trade Promotion
- Expanding participation in international trade fairs and exhibitions.
- Strengthening market presence in the Middle East, India, and Africa.
- Boosting digital transformation and e-commerce for global market access.
2. Investing in Advanced Wood Processing Technology
- Adopting CNC technology and automation to improve product quality and efficiency.
- Utilizing eco-friendly materials and reducing carbon emissions in manufacturing.
3. Promoting Sustainable Forestry Development
- Increasing the area of FSC- and PEFC-certified forests to ensure legal and sustainable timber supply.
- Implementing plantation area coding systems for enhanced traceability.
4. Optimizing Supply Chain and Risk Management
- Strengthening oversight of imported timber sources to prevent fraud.
- Adapting to economic fluctuations and changing international trade policies.
Vietnam’s Wood Industry – A Sustainable Future
With its robust growth trajectory and strategic development efforts, Vietnam’s wood industry continues to solidify its position in the global market. By embracing technology, sustainability, market diversification, and supply chain optimization, the sector is well-positioned to surpass the $18 billion export target in 2025.
