Top 10 Largest Shipping Lines in the World – Who’s Dominating the Oceans?
In today’s globalized economy, ocean container shipping serves as the backbone of international supply chains. Over 90% of the world’s traded goods are transported by sea, with an annual value amounting to trillions of US dollars. Behind this silent yet powerful movement are container shipping giants – the key players connecting economies from Asia and Europe to North America and Africa.
So, which shipping lines are currently leading the global maritime industry? Below is the 2025 ranking of the top 10 largest container shipping companies in the world, based on total carrying capacity in TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), as reported by Alphaliner.
1. MSC – Mediterranean Shipping Company (Switzerland)
With an estimated total capacity of around 5.5 million TEUs, MSC currently holds the title of the world’s largest container shipping line. Founded in 1970 in Geneva, Switzerland, MSC operates nearly 800 vessels across a vast global network that spans over 150 countries and 500 ports.
MSC’s rapid growth in recent years can be attributed to its strategic expansion through acquiring second-hand vessels, investing in new builds, and maintaining efficient cost control. The company also emphasizes integrated logistics solutions, journey optimization, and digital transformation to enhance its competitive edge.
2. Maersk Line (Denmark)
Maersk, a long-time leader in the container shipping industry, was surpassed by MSC in recent years. As of 2025, Maersk boasts a total carrying capacity of about 4.1 million TEUs and a fleet of over 700 modern ships.
More than just a shipping line, Maersk is a fully integrated logistics company with an “End-to-End” approach, offering door-to-door supply chain solutions. The group is heavily investing in digital innovation and developing a green fleet to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.
3. CMA CGM (France)
CMA CGM ranks third globally with a total capacity of approximately 3.8 million TEUs. Established in 1978 in Marseille, France, the company operates more than 600 ships and serves customers in over 160 countries.
CMA CGM stands out for its robust investments in supply chain technology and clean energy. The company is actively deploying LNG-powered vessels and expanding its logistics capabilities through acquisitions in air freight, warehousing, and last-mile delivery.
4. COSCO Shipping Lines + OOCL (China)
The combined capacity of COSCO and OOCL is around 3.1 million TEUs, placing them fourth on the global list. COSCO is China’s largest state-owned shipping conglomerate, while OOCL, originally from Hong Kong, became part of COSCO in 2018.
This alliance plays a critical role in China’s “Belt and Road Initiative,” with a strong global presence, substantial investments in port infrastructure, logistics hubs, and ultra-large container vessels to reinforce its global maritime leadership.
5. Hapag-Lloyd (Germany)
Founded in 1970, Hapag-Lloyd is Germany’s largest container shipping company, with a fleet capacity of around 2 million TEUs and over 250 vessels operating on more than 130 international routes.
Hapag-Lloyd is well-regarded for its transatlantic services and its expansion into emerging markets. The company is currently modernizing its fleet and transitioning toward eco-friendly fuels.
6. ONE – Ocean Network Express (Japan)
ONE was formed in 2018 from the merger of three major Japanese carriers: NYK, MOL, and K Line. Today, it commands a total capacity of approximately 1.8 million TEUs and operates in over 120 countries.
Despite being a relatively new player, ONE has quickly gained ground through its efficient service network and modern fleet. The company is focusing on digitization and improving vessel performance.
7. Evergreen Marine Corp. (Taiwan)
Evergreen is Taiwan’s largest container shipping company, with a fleet capacity of about 1.7 million TEUs. The carrier is known for its ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) and operates across major trade lanes connecting Asia, Europe, and North America.
Evergreen is actively investing in environmentally friendly technologies, including low-emission vessels and smart voyage management systems.
