1.1. Additional fees associated with shipping internationally by sea

Shipping lines also collect additional fees known as sea freight surcharges on top of the actual sea freight in logistics. These surcharges are intended to cover the costs paid by shipping lines as a result of many variables, such as volatility in fuel prices, port congestion, peak season, etc. These surcharges are not set and frequently fluctuate. In order to prevent omissions, shippers must be careful while determining the overall cost of transportation.

2. Table of fees and extras for maritime domestic container transportation

2.1. Freight for goods transported by sea within the country

Sea freight and surcharges are the two primary components of the price list of sea transport. The price of shipping goods from an export port to an import port is known as sea freight. Costs associated with loading and unloading, transportation, insurance, and other related operations are included in sea freight. Costs incurred above and beyond sea freight are known as surcharges, and they might take the following forms:

  • Delivery order fee (D/O fee): Is the fee collected by shipping lines to issue bills of lading to shippers.
  • Cleaning fee: Is the fee charged by shipping lines to clean containers after delivery.
  • Lift on/lift off fee: Is the fee charged by shipping lines to lift containers onto/off the ship.

3. How much freight costs to ship goods in a sea container

3.1. For full container goods - FCL

The following is a list of costs for shipping products by sea container:

  • Lifting fee: 750,000 - 1,200,000 VND/container
  • Container cleaning fee: 200,000 - 400,000 VND/container
  • D/O fee: 150,000 - 300,000 VND/D/O

For FCL products, the charge unit is often determined by looking at the shipment, bill, or container unit. For this reason, we use the following formula to determine fees for FCL goods:

  • On containers: cost = freight rate x number of containers.
  • On Bill or on shipment: cost = freight price x number of Bill or number of that shipment.

For example: 1 FCL shipment from HCM - TOKYO, 3x20DC will have the cost calculation of the shipment as follows:

Unit cost

3.2. For retail goods - LCL

Price list of sea transport are calculated based on two units:

  • Actual weight (KGS)
  • Actual volume = (length x width x height) x quantity (CBM)

Then continue to the formula:

  • If 1 ton < 3 CBM => heavy goods are calculated according to the KGS price list
  • If 1 ton >= 3 CBM => light goods calculated according to the CBM price list

For example: 1 retail shipment with weight: 1000kgs, size: 1.5 x2x1 (m), from HCM - BUSAN

  • Volume of shipment: 1.5x2x1 = 3CBM

We see that 1 Ton: 3 CBM >= 3 CBM: light goods, applied according to the CBM price list

The cost of shipment is as follows:

Unit cost

OF

4. Ocean freight rates are impacted by several factors

Price list of sea transport depend on many factors, including:

  • Type of goods: Different goods will need different shipping circumstances, which will result in varied freight costs. Goods that require specific storage conditions, are fragile, or have a high value will all have higher charges.
  • Volume and size of the goods: Lightweight, small-sized goods will have lower freight costs than bulky, high-volume commodities. The method of calculating freight in transport by sea involves evaluating the conversion value between volume (CBM) and weight (KGS).
  • Address for delivery: The cost of freight increases with the distance between the origin and the destination.
  • Type of container: Shipping costs will also differ based on the precise size (20 feet, 40 feet, etc.) and type of container (normal, reefer, open top, etc.).
  • Market conditions: Variations in supply and demand will impact the cost of shipping. Freight rates may rise during peak seasons due to an increase in demand for freight.
  • Price guidelines for every shipping unit: Every transportation company or unit has its own freight pricing policy.

5. Remarks for shipping products via sea

With over 80% of all trade taking place by sea, it is one of the most significant forms of transportation in the world. In order to ensure safe and efficient maritime freight transportation, the following considerations need to be made:

  • Please do not transfer any illegal goods, including firearms, drugs, or unusual animals. These things are illegal and will result in harsh penalties if found.
  • Selecting a trustworthy transportation provider is crucial. A respectable shipping firm will be dedicated to guaranteeing the security of your cargo, have a staff of experts with extensive expertise, and hold all necessary business permits.
  • Examine the details of the transportation agreement carefully, paying particular attention to the sections pertaining to the carrier's obligations, freight charges, transit duration, etc. Discuss any terms that aren't quite clear. Speak with the carrier to get a detailed explanation.
  • Select a mode of transportation based on the kind and quantity of the items. To select the most appropriate means of transportation, one must carefully weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each option.
  • Before making a choice, review the expenses of international sea freight. To discover the best deal, you can check costs on the website or get in direct contact with transportation firms.
  • Before signing, carefully review the terms of the transportation agreement. It is imperative to thoroughly review the transportation contract to prevent needless arguments down the road, as it clearly outlines the rights and responsibilities of both parties.
  • Purchasing cargo insurance is a practical way to reduce transportation-related hazards. Should the merchandise be lost or destroyed, the insurance provider will pay you in accordance with the law.

As a result, the carrier must deliver the items at the scheduled time and location from the port of receipt to the port of delivery. In addition, the renter is required to reimburse the carrier for freight and any additional surcharges.

A contract for the maritime transportation of products should expressly include the following terms in order to protect the rights and duties of both parties:

  • Details regarding the goods: Kind, amount, weight, size, character, worth, etc.
  • Details pertaining to each party: Name, number, and address,...
  • Details on the shipment: Delivery and receiving ports, transit duration,...
  • Additional costs and delivery charges
  • The carrier's obligations include inspecting the products prior to shipment, making on-time and location deliveries, accepting liability for any damage to the goods,...
  • Obligations for the person hiring the freight: Give full details about the products, pay shipping costs and any surcharges,...

A contract for the carriage of goods by sea is a highly valuable legal document that may be utilized to settle disagreements that may come up throughout the shipping procedure. In the event of a disagreement, the parties must depend on the language and provisions of the agreement to settle it.
