Fire And Explosions On Wan Hai 503 Off Indian Coast: A Wake-Up Call For Intra-Asia Sea Freight Supply Chains
On June 9, 2025, the container vessel Wan Hai 503, flying the Singapore flag, caught fire and experienced several explosions approximately 78 nautical miles off Beypore, near Kerala, southern India. The blaze was described as “out of control,” prompting the Indian Coast Guard to deploy multiple assets for rescue operations.
The vessel was carrying 22 crew members, mostly nationals from China and Myanmar. Eighteen of them jumped into the sea and have reportedly been rescued, some with injuries. The Wan Hai 503 was operating on an Intra-Asia route, traveling from Colombo Port in Sri Lanka to Nhava Sheva in India, with approximately 650 containers on board, including hazardous cargo.
Ongoing Maritime Disruptions in South Asia Raise Alarms
This is the second major maritime incident in less than two weeks in the region. On May 25, the MSC Elsa 3 capsized and sank off the coast of Cochin, with dozens of containers washing ashore.
The MSC Elsa 3 incident remains controversial, as reports suggest Indian authorities may be downplaying legal accountability for MSC, due to its increasing investment and presence in the country—especially at Vizhinjam Container Transshipment Terminal, a rising strategic port positioned to compete with Sri Lanka's Colombo.
India's Directorate General of Shipping stated that MSC and its P&I insurer appointed MERC to handle container recovery and shoreline cleanup. As of now, 51 out of 61 containers washed ashore have been recovered, with no reported oil spills.
These back-to-back events highlight the growing risk and fragility of key Intra-Asia shipping routes, which are increasingly congested and vulnerable to incidents with far-reaching supply chain impacts.
