According to an official announcement, COSCO entered into a long-term bareboat charter agreement with BoComm Leasing, a financial leasing arm of the Bank of Communications of China. The charter period spans approximately 16 years, with an average annual cost of USD 19.4 million per vessel.

Each new vessel will have a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of up to 60,000 DWT and will be built at Chengxi Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). These multipurpose ships are designed to transport ultra-heavy and oversized cargo, such as wind energy equipment, large-scale industrial machinery, steel structures, project cargo, port handling equipment, and other specialized goods.

Scaling Up – Anticipating Global Demand

This investment forms part of COSCO’s broader strategy to scale up its specialized fleet, aligning with the globalization trend in the logistics industry. In previous years, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers has collaborated with various domestic leasing firms to develop a wide range of dedicated vessels, including pulp carriers, multipurpose vessels, and car carriers.

As per its 2025 roadmap, COSCO plans to introduce over 50 new vessels, further cementing its position as one of the world’s leading specialized shipping operators. The growing heavy lift fleet not only serves the increasing demand from renewable energy projects, infrastructure development, port construction, and large-scale engineering, but also sets a new benchmark for global maritime transport capabilities.
