VINH - THANH THUY EXPRESSWAY: A STRATEGIC TRADE ARTERY CONNECTING VIETNAM - LAOS - THAILAND

With this expressway, the potential for cross-border logistics and transportation between Vietnam – Laos – Thailand will enter a new phase of faster, more efficient, and more cost-effective development.

Project Overview

According to Official Dispatch No. 611/TTg-CN dated May 28, 2025, the Prime Minister assigned the Nghe An Provincial People’s Committee as the governing body. The expressway is part of the Hanoi – Vientiane route within the East–West Economic Corridor.

• Total length: ~60 km

• Design scale: 6 lanes (Phase 1: 4 lanes; roadbed and bridges built to 6-lane standards)

• Design speed: up to 100 km/h; 60–80 km/h in complex terrain

• Roadbed width: 32.25 m (100 km/h section) and 29 m (60–80 km/h section)

• Total investment: VND 23,950 billion

• Timeline: 2025 – 2030

• Start point: Hung Tay interchange – North–South Expressway (Dien Chau – Bai Vot section)

• End point: Thanh Thủy Border Gate Economic Zone

• Route passes through: 9 communes – Hung Nguyen, Kim Lien, Dai Hue, Van An, Nam Dan, Xuan Lam, Hoa Quan, Son Lam, and Kim Bang.

This is the largest-scale and most significant project ever assigned to Nghe An Province.

Strategic Role

The Vinh – Thanh Thủy Expressway will complete the national transportation network by directly linking the North–South axis to Thanh Thủy Border Gate, shortening the distance from Hanoi to Vientiane (Laos) and opening an efficient transport route to Thailand and other ASEAN countries. It will serve as the lifeline for cross-border transportation in the North Central region.

The road will also drive socio-economic growth by reducing transport time and costs for goods and passengers, unlocking the potential of Western Nghe An – a resource-rich area with limited transport infrastructure. Tourism, processing industries, logistics, and mining are expected to benefit greatly. Investments in warehouse hubs, ICDs, and customs services at the border gate will also increase.

Beyond economic significance, the expressway will act as a bridge of friendship, fostering economic–trade, cultural, and tourism cooperation between Vietnam – Laos – Thailand, especially in cross-border trade and international road transport. It is also a strategic route from the coast to the border, supporting national defense, disaster response, and security.

For example, goods from Nghe An or Thanh Hoa can be transported directly to Vientiane in a short time, then onward by road to Bangkok or other ASEAN markets.
