Typhoon Wipha Severely Impacts Port Operations in Hai Phong: Import-Export Businesses Urged to Take Proactive Measures. Dolphin Sea Air stands by our customers to ensure a secure and uninterrupted supply chain throughout the storm season.

Table of contents

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, tropical storm Wipha, with sustained winds of level 10–11 (gusting up to level 13), is rapidly moving toward the mainland, directly impacting northern coastal provinces such as Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, and Thanh Hoa. With heavy rainfall, strong gusts, and sea waves reaching heights of 3–5 meters, Wipha is classified as a highly dangerous storm, posing a serious threat to maritime and logistics activities across Northern Vietnam.

In response to the storm's complex developments, several ports in Hai Phong have announced the temporary suspension of services starting July 21, 2025 to ensure the safety of vessels, cargo, and workers.

List of Ports Temporarily Suspended Due to Storm Impact

Below is the latest update from key seaports in Hai Phong:

Hoang Dieu – Chua Ve Port

  • Berth operations suspended from 12:00 PM, July 21, 2025
  • Container yard operations suspended from 3:00 PM the same day

Tan Vu Port (HICT)

  • All terminal operations suspended from 12:00 PM, July 21, 2025 until further notice

TIL International Port (HTIT)

  • Services suspended from 6:00 AM, July 21, 2025

Greenport, VIP Greenport, Nam Dinh Vu Ports

  • Operations suspended from 12:00 PM, July 21, 2025 until weather conditions permit safe resumption

The simultaneous suspension of services across major ports is expected to cause significant disruptions to import-export and cargo transportation activities—especially during the peak production and export season of the second half of the year.

Logistics and Import-Export Businesses Face Significant Challenges

Typhoon Wipha is not only disrupting port operations but also directly impacting cargo transportation schedules, warehousing, and customs clearance for import-export businesses. Potential risks include:

  • Delivery delays: Shipments scheduled for dispatch or receipt may be delayed as ports suspend container handling and vessels are unable to berth.

  • Increased storage costs: Delays in moving containers in or out of terminals may lead to additional demurrage, port storage, or ICD yard fees.

  • Supply chain disruptions: Particularly severe for factories with urgent production and export schedules tied to overseas orders.

  • Additional booking adjustments with carriers: When cargo cannot be loaded as scheduled, businesses must go through repeated booking procedures or incur rescheduling fees.

In this context, timely response and adjustments to logistics plans are critical to minimizing potential losses.

Recommendations from Dolphin Sea Air: Swift and Flexible Response Solutions

With extensive experience operating under adverse weather conditions, Dolphin Sea Air Services Corp. recommends the following urgent measures for import-export businesses, shipping lines, and international freight forwarders:

  1. Reschedule container loading/unloading ahead of port service suspensions to prevent cargo from being stranded in warehouses.
  2. Utilize backup storage or ICD facilities for temporary warehousing if access to the port is unavailable.
  3. Coordinate closely with carriers and forwarders to stay updated on booking status, adjust shipment schedules promptly, and avoid unexpected costs.
  4. Closely monitor weather updates and port announcements, and prepare contingency transport plans—including rerouting shipments through alternative regional ports if necessary.
  5. Proactively communicate with international partners and clients to keep them informed and adjust delivery timelines accordingly.
