2. Types of international air transportation fees and surcharges
International air freight rates include not only shipping costs but also many other costs. So, below are a few important international air shipping fees and surcharges you should know.
2.1. Some of the most popular types of fees today
All the popular fees today include:
- Normal Rate: Normal Rate
- Minimum Rate MR: Minimum rate is the lowest rate that customers will have to pay for air freight.
- General Cargo Rate GCR: This is the basic freight rate, used for items that do not have separate freight regulations. In particular, this type of freight will not receive any incentives from the shipping unit.

- Priority Rate: Expedited goods are goods that need to be shipped urgently. On average, this fee will be 30%–40% higher than the normal fee, depending on the type of goods and shipping unit.
- Class Cargo Rate: The class cargo rate is the separate price for each specific item; for valuable goods (gold, diamonds, etc.), the freight rate is 200% compared to GCR. Live animals are charged 150% compared to GCR; books, newspapers, luggage, etc. are charged 50% compared to GCR.
- Container Rate: The container rate is used for goods packed in air containers (different from sea containers).

2.2. Additional Charges
In addition to freight charges, surcharges incurred when transporting by air are unavoidable. Some common surcharges include:
- D/O fee: Delivery Order: This is the fee for the delivery order; you need to pay it when you arrive at the airport. Therefore, airlines will charge a D/O fee for consignees to present to customs and pick up goods.
- AWB (Airway Bill): AWB is a receipt fee issued by the airline directly or indirectly through an authorized agent. This is proof of the contract of carriage, not a document of ownership of the goods.
- THC Fee: Terminal Handling Charge: The THC fee is the cost of loading goods onto the plane.
- SCC - Security Charge: SCC is the fee for security screening at the airport, and this fee is quite low.

- AMS fee: Automatic Manifest System: The AMS fee is the fee for transmitting customs data into some countries, such as China, Canada, the USA,...
- FWB: Forward Bill Fee: The FWB fee is used to transmit national one-stop information data for the main bill of lading.
- Handling fee: The handling fee is the fee for loading and unloading goods from the transport vehicle to the warehouse and arranging for them to wait on the plane.
- FHL fee: FHL is the national one-stop information data transmission fee for secondary bills of lading.
- Bill splitting fee: This fee is used in cases where the forwarder combines multiple house bills. At the port, cargo companies will have to separate the bills.

3. Formula for calculating international air freight rates
Calculating international air freight rates is an important step to help businesses calculate in advance the total shipping costs that need to be paid. This will help businesses save costs and improve market competitiveness. Below is the formula for calculating shipping rates:
3.1. The shipping fee depends on the weight of the goods (chargeable weight)
Unlike other types of transportation, international freight fees are specifically regulated by unified tariffs. What is chargeable weight for calculating?
Air freight = unit fare x charge volume
In which: chargeable weight is the actual weight (balanced by an electronic scale); physical weight is the weight of goods, including packaging and pallets.
For example, if Company X wants to send a shipment of six packages, each package has dimensions of 120 cm x 120 cm x 120 cm. Weight of each package: 200 kg, including packaging weight.
Perform calculation:
- Actual weight: 200 kg
- Calculate volumetric weight: (120 x 120 x 120)/6000 = 288 kg.
Since volume weight is greater than gross weight, use the volume weight value to calculate freight.
Freight = 288 x 6 x 3$ = 5184 (USD) (For example: 3$/kgs)

3.2. The shipping fee depends on the size of the goods (volume, weight)
Volume Weight has a formula similar to Chargeable Weight, but because the size of the goods has additional parameters, the formula will be changed as follows:
Volume Weight = Length x Width x Height x Calculation Factor (e.g., 1/6000 or 1/5000)
To better understand the calculation, you can refer to a few illustrative problems below:
Example 1 - Actual mass is less than volumetric mass
Your company wants to transport 5 boxes, each weighing 20kg and measuring 70x50x60 (cm).
We perform the following calculation steps:
- Actual weight (AW): 5 x 20 = 100kg
- Volume weight (DW): 5 x (70 x 50 x 60) / 6000 = 175kg
Because DW is larger than AW, the billable weight will be based on DW, meaning 175kg

Example 2 - Actual mass is greater than volumetric mass
My company wants to import a shipment of 2 packages, each weighing 50 kg and measuring 50 x 40 x 40 (cm).
The detailed calculation is as follows:
- Actual weight (AW): 2 x 50 = 100kg
- Volume weight (DW): 2 x (50 x 40 x 40) = 26.67kg
The actual weight is larger, so it will be taken as the chargeable weight: 100 kg.
4. Goods are often transported by plane.
Unlike other types of transportation, goods transported by plane are quite strictly regulated. Not all types of goods can be transported by this chemical. Types of goods often transported by plane include:
- Fresh goods: goods such as fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, fresh seafood, etc. will be transported by plane to maintain quality.
- Medical and cosmetic products: Medical products need to be transported quickly to meet urgent needs such as vaccines, drugs, medical chemicals,...
- High-value goods such as gold: diamonds, money, etc. are often transported by plane to ensure safety.
- Technology products: Due to the urgency and need for speed, phones, computers, electronic components, and other technology products are often transported by machine.

- Sample goods: These are products used for display in public places or test samples when transported by plane to ensure greater safety.
- Send clothes, accessories, shoes,...
- Ultra-light and compact goods: To save time, these goods should be transported by air.
- Animal goods: pets, birds, live animals,...
- Agricultural and forestry food products: Confectionery, dried fruits, cereals, bird's nests,...

5. Factors affecting international air freight rates
International air freight rates are not always fixed, they can change at any time depending on the following factors:
5.1. Types of goods transported
Most goods transported by air are high-value goods to ensure safety. Depending on the nature of the goods, the way they are packed and arranged in the compartment is appropriate, helping to prevent them from being damaged. From there, it also causes shipping costs to be higher than normal.

5.2. Carriers
Currently, Vietnam has 5 civil airlines operating, 3 service airlines, and 2 cargo airlines:
- 5 civil airlines: Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Bamboo Airways, Pacific Airlines (formerly Jetstar Pacific), and Viettravel Airlines.
- 3 service airlines: Vietnam Helicopter Corporation, VASCO Vietnam Aviation Services Company, and Haiu Aviation Joint Stock Company.
- Two airlines transport cargo: Vietjet Cargo, a subsidiary of Vietjet Air, and Vietnam Airlines Cargo, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Airlines (Vietnam Airlines).
Besides, there are also international airlines that have cargo transportation services. Each airline will have a different service price list and apply different calculation formulas. Each airline will have different costs and calculation methods. Businesses should contact the shipping unit in advance to receive detailed and accurate pricing advice.
5.3. Shipping method
Depending on the shipping method that a business chooses, freight rates will vary. For example, if the item is needed urgently and the business chooses expedited shipping, the shipping cost will be slightly higher than with normal shipping.
