1. What does it mean to Cross border transportation?

Transporting commodities over national borders by land, sea, or air is known as cross border transportation. The reach of this kind of international cargo service is not restricted to a single nation. One nation serves as the journey's beginning point, and another serves as its destination.

Cross-border transportation is not limited to just one country

At the moment, Vietnam shares borders with China, Cambodia, and Laos. In addition, this region is surrounded by numerous sizable seaports and a lengthy maritime route. These have made it possible for cross-border transportation to grow. Trade in goods is easy between Vietnam and the three nations mentioned above. Alternatively, cargo from other nations may also pass through Vietnam.

2. The function of international trade in Vietnam's import and export operations

Vietnam has historically been regarded as the entry point to Indochina, one of the nations that make up the Mekong River basin. As a result, this kind of international road transportation is highly developed and serves nations like China, Cambodia, and Laos that border Vietnam.

Cross border transportation
Move cargo swiftly and more affordably

Businesses may move goods across borders more quickly and affordably with this kind of cross-border transportation than with air or sea travel. As a result, this kind of technology has grown to be one of the most widely used and sophisticated ways to carry import and export items in the modern day.

3. Several challenges in international transportation

In addition to advantageous circumstances, cross border transportation in Vietnam has various challenges:

  • Information technology and infrastructure are the first constraint. The use of information technology to monitor the transportation process still has a lot of shortcomings and challenges.
  • There are still several gaps in the infrastructure that supports cross-border road transport, including sites for vehicle repairs, cold storage, cargo handling equipment, and container gathering and screening areas.
  • The amount of commodities being carried to Vietnam from other nations is far greater than the amount of goods being exported from Vietnam to other markets. This raises transportation costs and makes it more difficult for the logistics sector to make efficient use of the vehicles' transportation capability.

China has completed the construction of the first high-speed rail line that runs straight to the Vietnam-China border on August 8, 2023. China has reportedly built a 500-meter railway segment on the road that runs through the Zhuang autonomous region of Guangxi, between Fangchenggang and Dongxing.

The first high-speed rail line to cross the border between China and Vietnam is the Fangcheng-Dongxing line. The route is currently in the phase of progressive completion. This route is anticipated to be formally launched by the end of this year.

With a design speed of up to 200 km/h, the high-speed railway is 46.9 km long. Future travel speeds up to 250 km/h are being achieved by the installation of infrastructure. As of right now, the road and bridge construction is roughly 97% finished, while the tunnel construction is finished.

The western end of the route is Dong Hung station

The recently constructed Dong Hung station marks the western end of the railway. The station is situated on the east bank of the Bac Luan River, which serves as China's and Vietnam's border.

It is anticipated that the majority of the freight carried by this railway line in the future will be passengers. The route also goes through several phases of the cross-border transportation procedure concurrently.

6. [Update] The Laos-China Railway encourages international trade

The round-trip railway linking China, Laos, and Thailand recently commenced operations at the beginning of this month. In addition to Laos and Thailand, plans to construct a high-speed train between the capital Phnom Penh with Poi Pet, which is close to the Thai border, were also revealed by Cambodia in the middle of February of this year. This demonstrates that the Cambodian side is equally keen to seize the chance to increase cross-border transportation links with the Chinese market.

Cross border transportation
The railway connecting three countries: China, Laos, and Thailand has just come into operation

On February 18 of current year, an international intermodal route was tested at the Kep station in Bac Ninh, Vietnam. This will enable Vietnam's intermodal railway to be seamlessly connected to the rest of the globe and is a positive step toward the country's 2030 railway network strategy.

At the moment, the planning concept also calls for the immediate building of several new railway lines. Building connections between international gateway ports is given significant attention, particularly in the areas of Hai Phong and Ba Ria Vung Tau, as well as between Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho, as well as between Laos and Cambodia.

As a result, via the Chinese railway line at stations in the Dong Dang and Lao Cai border gate locations, Vietnam's railway network will be connected throughout Asia, connected to ASEAN, and connected to Asia-Europe.
